Abbey Hill School

Winner of Large Scale Project (Over £250,000) // NFRC Awards 2019

The roof of this school for 11-16 year olds with learning difficulties needed to be completely replaced. However, the scale of the project and the need to avoid disrupting classes meant that work could only be carried out during school holidays. Needless to say, our highly skilled team of estimators and contracts managers were able to work with the client to ensure this challenging programme was achieved. Moreover, our skilled operatives completed the works to the high standard for which Barclay Roofing is know throughout the industry. As a result, we were delighted to be named winner of the Large Scale Project category in the prestigious 2019 National Federation of Roofing Contractors Awards.

The Project

The 30-year-old roof was failing in many areas and there were signs of numerous repairs, some of which had been poorly completed, while other areas had been subject to vandalism. The felt beneath the slates was an old 1F bitumen-based sarking felt, which had seriously deteriorated in areas due to heat and gasses, causing it to break down and cause condensation issues within the building. The structural glazing housed on the ridge line of the roof had been installed at the same time as the original roof, so was single- glazed, offering little heat retention.

The size and scale of the project meant that it had to be delivered during the summer holidays of 2017 and 2018 so as not to cause any disruption to pupil education . Within that timeframe scaffold was erected, work carried out and scaffold dropped ready for the students to return. Needless to say, this was a tight timeframe and required high levels of planning and efficiency to be achievable.

Highly skilled Barclay Roofing operatives re-roofed the school with IKOslate, a composite tile made with 99% recycled and reengineered materials. Manufactured to look like natural slate, the tile is stronger than natural slate and can be fixed with power tools. This enabled our team to install the new roof more quickly in line with the challenging programme.
