Domestic Home Improvement

In 2014 we were approached by a prospective domestic client who was seeking quotations for the roofing work on a large extension to the side of their home. Planning permission had just been granted and their project was moving quickly. They had heard of Barclay Roofing through a referral from another domestic customer, and knew that the existing roof on their six year old Kebbell Homes property had originally been supplied and fixed by Barclay Roofing.

Upon contacting us, the client was surprised to hear that we could actually deliver a full end to end construction service not limited to roofing; from groundworks and building to joinery, plumbing and electrical work. On learning of our full end to end offer, the client commissioned us to undertake the whole project and work commenced within weeks.

Understanding the client’s requirements was key to achieving their desired outcome. As such, we consulted with them and took the time to understand their budget and how they wanted to work with us. As the client wanted to remain living in the property with their family for the duration of the build, we were careful to build a schedule that kept mess, disruption and intrusion to a minimum.

The build was far from straightforward, but as with everything here at Barclay Roofing, we ensured that the complexities of the build did not impact on the finished result. Standard foundations were not an option, so we developed a solution to circumnavigate the issue. As such, a floating foundation with a gas permeable membrane was laid. Thanks to the extension’s imaginative design, a complex network of supporting structural beams were also used. This allowed the client to achieve the ‘Grand Designs’ look with the minimum of fuss.

Once the extension was watertight, we worked with our chosen rendering supplier to make sure that the new extension blended seamlessly into the existing building. No less than 24 samples were assessed before we hit on the right formula, and our rendering partners worked with the weather to ensure that the colour was perfect. Internally, and in addition to the first and second fix, our skilled operatives fitted a stove, as well as a new kitchen and bathroom and even a sound-proof room which the client planned to convert into a music studio. The client was also keen to make a feature of their staircase, and our joiners certainly delivered, designing their perfect floating design. Moreover, our operatives expertly built and fitted the staircase to the client’s specification.

Towards the end of the build, the client’s driveway was re-laid, fencing was erected and hard and soft landscaping was finished off. The build took four months, and the client was delighted with the quality of the build, levels of service and commented that our operatives consistently went to extra mile to think of creative solutions to complex problems.
